2.2.11: Ostrich Egg

This is the first time we saw an ostrich egg.  Hubby's niece brought back several ostrich eggs from Africa. The eggs were drained, and had a small hole at the bottom. They were huge and the shell is rather hard. I wonder how the baby ostrich can hatch from the egg, as it seems quite tough to crack the shell.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostrich) the Ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest egg of any living bird.
