20.2.11: Academy of Pastry Arts Open Day

After returning our library books at the National Library, we proceeded to the Academy of Pastry Arts Open Day. It is located at the 2nd floor of Wisma Thrifty, opposite PJ Hilton. I parked at the outdoor car park beside the Wisma Thrifty.

Except for a piece of paper plastered on the outside of the building, there weren't any signages to academy inside the building itself. I asked 2 security guards who were working there and they both shook their heads. "Strange", I thought. "I know this was the right building, but even the security guards have never heard of the academy. I wondered what kind of security guards they were - such apathetic attitude and not bothered to find out more about the building they were working in. What if there's a fire? Would they even know the location? Finally, I found the lift which was in front of Giant Supermarket cashiers.

There quite a number of people there already. We registered for the workshop and were told to wait until they called us in. Meanwhile, we could sample the delicious pastries made by students laid out on a long table.  The boys loved the croissant and the pistachio cookies.

Then, we were brought on a tour of the place and checked out the various rooms. There was a large oven, in a room for baking and there was a cold room so that the chocolates don't melt.

After the tour, we waited awhile until the earlier group completed their hands-on activities. Then, we went into the room. We were shown how to make flowers from sugar paste (gum paste).

After that, we went out of the room to see the chef making croissant, instead of staying on to do the cupcake decoration. However, S was insistent that he wanted to decorate the cupcake. So, we went into the room again, and two staff there helped the boys with the cupcake decoration.

Very happy with his cupcake

I'd love to join in for a short workshop, but at this moment, I don't have the free time to go off on my own without the kids. It would be nice if they have some toddler baking workshops which I can attend with them.
